"Phantasmagoria" è un viaggio all'interno dell'immaginario orrorifico e dei suoi protagonisti, tra letteratura gotica, leggenda popolare e cinema. La mostra celebra la capacità di sfruttare il carattere ingannevole delle percezioni sensoriali per generare stupore e inquietudine e la passione per il mistero, il fantastico e il soprannaturale.

La «Phantasmagoria» o Fantasmagoria, da cui prende il nome la mostra, è una bizzarra forma di intrattenimento, nata in Francia intorno al XVIII secolo, che usava una versione modificata della lanterna magica per proiettare immagini spaventose come scheletri, demoni e fantasmi su muri, fumo, lenzuola o schermi semi-trasparenti.
Le lanterne magiche avevano la straordinaria capacità di utilizzare la luce per creare immagini che ingannavano i sensi mostrando figure irreali e intangibili, che incuriosivano e spaventavano gli spettatori, richiamando alla mente le paure e il subconscio temuto.
La fantasmagoria e i suoi inventori sono i precursori del cinema moderno. Anche George Méliès, il pioniere del Cinema, utilizzò le immagini mostruose, i trucchi e le atmosfere della Fantasmagoria nei suoi primi cortometraggi di fine ‘800, inizio ‘900.

Gerlanda dedica a questo tema dieci opere inedite. Alcune di esse ci raccontano storie crudeli, come quella leggendaria di Azzurrina di Montebello, quasi per poterne esorcizzare il dolore e riuscire a condividerne il fardello con tutti gli spettatori. Altre hanno come protagonisti personaggi partoriti dalla mente di scrittori geniali e divenuti ormai icone della cultura Pop, come Dracula.

Ogni dipinto porta con sé l’anima di questi personaggi, che, per quanto raccapriccianti, amano e soffrono come noi e rappresentano la vita (e la morte) nelle sue più varie sfaccettature, quasi fossero specchi dei nostri lati più oscuri.

"Phantasmagoria" is a journey into the horror imagery and its protagonists, between Gothic literature, popular legend and cinema. The exhibition celebrates the ability to exploit the deceptive nature of sensory perceptions to generate amazement and dread and the passion for mystery, the fantastic and the supernatural.

The «Phantasmagoria» or Fantasmagoria, from which the exhibit takes its name, is a bizarre form of entertainment, born in France around the eighteenth century, which used a modified version of the magic lantern to project scary images like skeletons, demons and ghosts on walls , smoke, sheets or semi-transparent screens.

The magic lanterns had the extraordinary ability to use light to create images that deceived the senses by showing unreal and intangible figures which intrigued and frightened the spectators, recalling fears and the subconscious.

Phantasmagoria and its inventors are the precursors of modern cinema. Even George Méliès, the pioneer of the Cinema, used the monstrous images, the tricks and the atmospheres of Fantasmagoria in his first short films between the end of the 1800s and the beginning of the 1900s.

Gerlanda dedicates ten unpublished works to this theme. Some of them tell us cruel stories, like the legendary story of Azzurrina di Montebello, almost to be able to exorcise the pain and to share the burden with all the spectators. Other stories have as protagonists characters born from the mind of genius writers and now become icons of the Pop culture, like Dracula.

Each painting embodies the soul of these characters, who, as gruesome as they are, love and suffer like us and represent life (and death) in its most varied facets, as if they were mirrors of our darker sides.
